Poking up from sun-baked plains like a giant’s thumb, the incredible rock formation of Sigiriya is one of Sri Lanka’s most spectacular geographical and archeological extravagances. Crowning its 200m – high flat-topped pinnacle are the 1,500- year old relics of the royal ancient civilization and the palace of King Kasyappa.

Standing lofty from the central plains, the iconic rocky outcrop which is adorned with lush flora is a thigh-burning climb through the nearly vertical walls to the top, past colossal boulders and mossy caves, but a worthily endeavor. As you ascend stone steps, pause to admire frescoes of voluptuous nymphs, as vivid and enigmatic as when they were first painted, centuries ago.

The final scramble passes through a pair of a majestic lion’s paws guarding the blustery peak. You’ll be rewarded with head -spinning views of the surrounding mist-wrapping jungle, stretching like a jade blanket into the distance. Sigiriya still denies revealing its true legacy. A real treat is a pool – ideal for refreshing dips after hot, dusty climbs up the rock.
