The archaeological opulence of Anuradhapura, which is a primeval thriving royal capital of palaces, temples, monasteries and reservoirs, is one of South Asia’s most reminiscent sight. Anuradhapura’s striking enormous dagobas (brick stupas) built during Anuradhapura’s thousand years of rule over Sri Lanka are just as impressive today as they were 20 centuries ago.
Anuradhapura’s legacy over 1000 years accounts, Sinhalese kings –and South Indian invaders kept the prosperous Anuradhapura as their royal capital. Contrary to that, now it is a composed and pleasant city with flourishing flora and 20th-century guesthouses which cater to the rent-by-the-hour market.
Here you’ll find the oldest stupa on the island, Thuparamaya, built in the third century BC by Devanampiyatissa, and believed to enshrine the right collarbone of Buddha.Another of Anuradhapura’s holy highlights is the Sri MahaBodhi, grown from a cutting taken from the famous bodhi tree beneath which Buddha found enlightenment more than years ago, and thought to be the world’s oldest tree. It’s a mesmerising sight, decked in fluttering, rainbow- hued prayer flags and thronging with thousands of devotees.
